I went to a talk you gave about J.G. Ballard. What do you think he would have to say about the Olympic transformation of the east end of London? He’d probably have loved it! He loved modernity, he loved big things – he was ambivalent of course, but it gave him a sort of visceral thrill that he connected to his wonderstruck childhood in Shanghai which at that time – the 1930s – was one of the most technologically advanced cities in the world.
